COVID-19 Protocol
Your safety is our highest priority, and we are carefully monitoring the pandemic-related protocols for travel in Italy. Fortunately, as elsewhere, the incidence of COVID-19 within Namibia is decreasing steadily, and 79% of Namibia are fully vaccinated. Please note that Astronomy Journeys requires all participants on its tours to be fully vaccinated.
About The Event
From October XX to XX, we are travelling to Lonar Meteorite Crater in Maharashtra to experience a staggering impact crater in the ground.
This is an AstroGeology (Astronomy + Geology) tour aimed especially for newcomers into astronomy, from families, individuals, couples and general enthusiasts of Astronomy who want to
learn the night sky from one of India's BEST night sky specialists. While 8 days of the tour will be given for recreation and relaxation, the 3 nights of June 28, 29, 30 will be dedicated to learning the night sky by laying down under it and observing with 10x50 binoculars with star charts/atlases.
Here the participants will get to involve in hands-on observing and learn how to maximize the potential of small binoculars into making some important celestial observations – and thereby learn how experienced international visual observers maximize even small instruments into making scientific discoveries. At the end of 3 nights, you'll not anymore be new to the landscape of the night sky and its constellations as well as making sky observations, ready to step onto the next level of observational / practical astronomy.
At 1.8 kms in diameter, the Lonar Meteorite Crater is even larger than the world-famous Barringer Meteorite Crater in Arizona, USA, which is at 1.1 kms in diameter.
We hike down the crater and go on a walk around its 6 kms circumference covering the entire crater, in places which are accessible. Within the crater, around the inner periphery, are a dozen temples dating back to 11th - 12th century, many of them now in ruins and submerged. The properties of the crater and lake are many that make it special and a most unique crater-lake in the world.
Lonar is believed to be a case of a "double crater". An adjacent lake called Ambar Lake is believed to be formed from the impact of a bounced off fragment of the main large meteorite!
Join Astronomy Journeys to experience the beautiful Indian geological crater like how literally no one in India can show it to you – it is NOT a mere hobby or sky-gazing for us, we are VERY well-versed in speaking the language of amateur astronomy for the last 20 years full-time.
